Electric ATMP Virtual Demonstration to take place

In the last twelve -months the absence of exhibitions and events, continues to be felt globally and has significantly impacted many SME’s and OEM’s. We are therefore reaching out to governments, national armed forces, industry thought leaders, the commerical and utilities sectors to deliver a series of live shows featuring our world renowned platforms.

Today’s virtual demonstration showcases a breakthrough electric and optionally manned vehicle specifically developed for rugged off-highway transportation.  The technology has been developed under a Knowledge Transfer Partnership between the UK’s high mobility vehicle specialist, SC Innovation and The University of Exeter.

Developed by the company’s specialist and emergency services vehicles team, SC Innovation, the eATMP is the technology demonstrator for an electric drive-train that has tested and validated to operate successfully over harsh terrains beyond the scope of commercial SUVs. Crucially, the drive train can be applied to new vehicles or retrofitted to existing fleets, and the architecture readily tailored to the task, range, payload and operating environment that each vehicle will be used for.

Our aim is that the demonstration and briefing will help inform our viewers about how this class of vehicle can be transformed to electric as part of the solution for net-zero emissions and clean air for off road/off highway applications in a variety of applications, including as a key enabler for remote or autonomous operation.

eATMP KTP Partnership Engineer Collaborate to Innovate Shortlist

We have worked closely with the University of Exeter (UoE) for a number of years, initially providing their engineering students with project topics in order to provide a meaningful link with the engineering industry during their studies, whilst also providing an additional means of advancing our knowledge of emerging technologies through the students’ research undertaken as part of their studies.

The Knowledge Transfer Partnership awarded to Supacat by the University of Exeter has served to meet a core strategic need; by upcycling a 1980’s vehicle of choice the All-Terrain Mobility Platform to meet the environmental demands within the 21st Century.

The collaboration with the University of Exeter through the Knowledge Transfer Partnership programme has revolutionised this former military vehicle and is set to open up new markets for the new Electric All Terrain Mobile Platform (eATMP).

A benefit of the development of this new vehicle and the underlying technology is its ability to be transferred to other platforms. Within the automotive industry there has been considerable focus on developing hybrid propulsion systems for on-road vehicles, however development of similar technology for off-road applications is lagging behind quite considerably. SC Innovation offers a range of highly capable off-road vehicles both for defence and non-defence applications and there are plans in place, and one contracted development project, which aims to employ a good deal of the knowledge gained from this project to achieve similar benefits on alternative vehicles.

A further positive impact of this project is the ability to accelerate the adoption of electrically propelled vehicle technology. Only by demonstrating the numerous advantages of such technology in a physical form will potential users be able to judge the benefits for themselves, and this vehicle now enables that to happen.

The winners of the category will be announced early February 2021.

Finalist for Best Knowledge Transfer Partnership of the KTP Best of the Best Awards 2020.

A ground-breaking collaboration, between experts from Supacat Ltd and the University of Exeter, to spearhead a green revolution in defence and off-highway transport has been short-listed for a prestigious national award.

The innovative project, between Supacat and the University of Exeter, has been chosen as a finalist for Best Knowledge Transfer Partnership of the KTP Best of the Best Awards 2020.

The final judging for the influential awards, hosted by the Knowledge Transfer Network, will take place at a special ceremony on September 9th.

The project,  directed by Professor Chris Smith and Steve Austen, saw Engineering experts pioneer a new, electric-drive version of the ATMP vehicle – which successfully used by regular and special operations forces in combat zones across the world, as well as in a range of non-military applications, where world class mobility, durability and payload capacity has earned it much popularity.

Called the H-ATMP, Hybrid-All Terrain Mobility Platform, the new vehicle replaces its traditional diesel engine with six electric motors; one attached to each wheel, and can be configured for full electric or hybrid versions.  Crucially, for applying to a variety of rugged off-highway applications, the hybrid electric drive-train can be tailored and customised, depending on the mission, range, payload and operating environment that each vehicle will be used for.

The innovative, eco-friendly vehicle is now being developed further so it can be ‘optionally manned’.

The step change in technology integration and associated performance benefits is the result of a unique collaboration between the University of Exeter and Supacat, the defence business of Devon-based SC Group, under the Government’s Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) scheme.

The project has already had a number of significant successes and led to new revenue streams for the company.

As well as placing both the University and SC Group at the forefront of developers internationally for electric hybrid drivetrains for high mobility vehicles, the collaboration has also led to the University of Exeter now working with more than 20 additional businesses across the sector.

It has also meant two new jobs have been created at Supacat for the two young engineers from the University, Matt Harvey and Yash Katare, who have led the development of the electric-driven and optionally manned ATMP, drawing on 20 years’ industry experience of Principal Engineers Simon Turner and Mark Field.  They will work on developing the technology for Supacat’s defence market and to serve the wider marine, rail, energy or emergency services markets for SC Group sister business, SC Innovation.

Professor Smith said: “I’m very proud of the work we did on the H-ATMP, but also very humble to be considered for the Best KTP Award. This kick started what is now a region-wide push for clean mobility in land sea and air, with more than 20 companies working with us on a wide range of new vehicles and vessels. – The KTP provided us with an excellent challenge to innovate a new, cleaner electric powered vehicle, which has kick-started a fast-expanding stream of work with other companies in off-highway, rail, defence, and marine hybridisation and electrification research.  It’s catapulted us into a leading position in innovation for new clean power systems for all kinds of transport.”

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) aim to help organisations improve their competitiveness and productivity through better use of the knowledge, technology and skills held within the UK knowledge base.

Sean Fielding, Director of Innovation, Impact and Business at the University of Exeter said: “Knowledge Transfer Partnerships are a brilliant way for ambitious businesses to gain access to the latest high-tech R&D and creative thinking.  Exeter has more KTPs than any university in the South West and we are very proud of the contribution our researchers and students are making to regional organisations.”

The University and SC Global KTP project received financial support from UKRI through Innovate UK.

SC Innovation supports local school initiative encouraging pupils to consider engineering as a career

SC Innovation part of SC Group, a company who is an innovation house, priding itself on its unique engineering capabilities from concept through to production build, and through life support welcomed a group of year 11 students from Blundell’s School, Tiverton https://www.blundells.org/.

Blundell’s visit forms part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative, https://www.stem.org.uk/about-us, which encourages young people across the UK to engage and achieve in these subject matters and careers within these sectors.

SC Innovation hosted a visit by a group of Blundell’s year 11 students, during which the students were given a tour of the company’s facility at Dunkeswell, Devon, where they were able to see the highly acclaimed ‘Jackal’ HMT 400 patrol vehicle used by British Forces; the Light-Weight Recovery Vehicle designed for the defence sector; and the Lifeboat Launch and Recovery System (L&RS) developed for the RNLI Shannon class lifeboat.  The L&RS project was led by Principal Engineer for SC Innovation Principal Engineer, Engineering Projects, Simon Turner. The students were greeted by Simon, who presented a range of ground-breaking projects SC Innovation has been involved in.

SC Innovation’s Simon Turner said, “With our expertise in a wide range of engineering designs across the defence and non-defence sectors, we are a perfect fit to support the STEM learning initiative.  We were delighted to be able to support Blundell’s school and huge supporters for inspiring young people to develop a career within engineering”.

Blundell’s school, Mr Sal Uddin, Stem Coordinator said, “I have worked hard to raise the profile of the subjects and dispel student misconceptions. Every March for the last 2 years I have been given year 11 for a day and normally, I have had STEM Ambassadors attending and doing hands on activities with the students. This has gone down really well with our students so this year I decided to add a few industrial visits and let the students select. I am very keen to make this an annual event and will happily work with you to tweak the program to give the students a better understanding of the uses of STEM. I know we separately need more engineers in this country!”

Ovivo tasks SC Innovation with testing water filtration components for Hinkley Point ‘C’

SC Innovation, the design and engineering arm of Devon based SC Group, has completed structural tests on key water filtration components for Ovivo UK, which is supplying the cooling water intake screening system for Hinkley Point ‘C’.

The tests, which were conducted in January at SC Innovation’s Dunkeswell facility and witnessed by representatives from Ovivo UK, assessed the structural strength of the proposed mesh panels to be used for the Drum Screen. This is a key part of the cooling water intake screening system, which will be used to cool both the electricity generating steam-cycle and the nuclear reactor services of the new nuclear power plant.

The 1m x 1.5m mesh panels will be fitted to four 27m diameter drums, which complete a full rotation every 35 minutes. Water enters from the side and flows through the panels radially from the inside to the outside, filtering through the mesh. The debris collected in the mesh is then cleaned using jets of water and a hopper.

The tests examined potential deformation by applying pressure cycles to the mesh to determine whether the mesh would withstand service at its maximum design pressure. Three different meshes were successfully tested at various pressure increments to a maximum of 3.5 times the mesh design pressure, without a single failure. Linear Variable Displacement Transducers (LVDT’s) continuously captured displacement measurements at various positions on the mesh whilst also recording pressure and temperature measurements. The data captured was recorded and analysed using state of the art data acquisition software configured for this test by SC Innovation.

SC Innovation won the project from Ovivo UK based on the comprehensive engineering capabilities available across SC Group and its agility, original thinking and rigorous approach to planning, testing and reporting. Joe Wilcox, Head of SC Innovation, commented, “This project fits within one of our core competencies; delivering engineering projects demanding high levels of compliance with strict regulatory and technical standards. We worked closely with Ovivo UK to complete the project successfully, matching our capabilities to their requirements along the way and positioning ourselves to pursue further opportunities in the nuclear sector in new build, existing generation and decommissioning”.

Ovivo UK have been awarded the contract to supply Nuclear New Build (NNB) / Électricité de France S.A. (EDF; Electricity of France) with the water inlet system for the Hinkley Point ‘C’ (HPC) Nuclear Power Station, which will be one of the largest filtration systems in the world when installed.  As part of the Contract Ovivo are required to test the filtration mesh panel system to demonstrate that it can achieve the required performance parameters based on the various load conditions that the equipment will be expected to encounter during its working life.

Ovivo are currently working with the HPC Supply Chain Support Team at the Somerset Energy Innovation Centre in Bridgwater to identify and engage local fabrication companies and test houses. Having undertaken an extensive review of the local test houses Ovivo have engaged SC Innovation, who are based in Dunkeswell, Devon, to undertake the testing programme for the mesh panels.

SC Innovation’s experience coupled with their high standards and professional approach has resulted in the successful testing of the filtration mesh panels, which in turn has allowed Ovivo to complete a significant design milestone”, said Sid Jones, Supply Chain Manager, Ovivo UK.

SC Innovation is F4N (Fit for Nuclear) accredited and the project is its second for Hinkley Point C, following on from providing Engineering Design and Project Management Support to Blackhill Engineering, also part of SC Group, in delivering heavy steel structures for the temporary jetty at the Hinkley Point C site near Bridgwater.

SC Innovation’s engineering capabilities are in mechanical and electrical engineering, structural analysis, structural optimisation, fluid structural simulation and test and validation, including full system prototype build.  The business has an established production capability carrying out low rate, high quality builds. Together with the in-house project management team these capabilities have combined to deliver projects for energy and marine customers, often in partnership with academic and industrial partners.

Hinkley Point C is the first nuclear power plant to be built in the UK for decades and is one of Europe’s biggest construction sites. The project will create 25,000 job opportunities and aims to create 1,000 apprenticeships during construction.
