SC Innovation supports local school initiative encouraging pupils to consider engineering as a career

02-03-2020

SC Innovation part of SC Group, a company who is an innovation house, priding itself on its unique engineering capabilities from concept through to production build, and through life support welcomed a group of year 11 students from Blundell’s School, Tiverton https://www.blundells.org/.

Blundell’s visit forms part of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) initiative, https://www.stem.org.uk/about-us, which encourages young people across the UK to engage and achieve in these subject matters and careers within these sectors.

SC Innovation hosted a visit by a group of Blundell’s year 11 students, during which the students were given a tour of the company’s facility at Dunkeswell, Devon, where they were able to see the highly acclaimed ‘Jackal’ HMT 400 patrol vehicle used by British Forces; the Light-Weight Recovery Vehicle designed for the defence sector; and the Lifeboat Launch and Recovery System (L&RS) developed for the RNLI Shannon class lifeboat.  The L&RS project was led by Principal Engineer for SC Innovation Principal Engineer, Engineering Projects, Simon Turner. The students were greeted by Simon, who presented a range of ground-breaking projects SC Innovation has been involved in.

SC Innovation’s Simon Turner said, “With our expertise in a wide range of engineering designs across the defence and non-defence sectors, we are a perfect fit to support the STEM learning initiative.  We were delighted to be able to support Blundell’s school and huge supporters for inspiring young people to develop a career within engineering”.

Blundell’s school, Mr Sal Uddin, Stem Coordinator said, “I have worked hard to raise the profile of the subjects and dispel student misconceptions. Every March for the last 2 years I have been given year 11 for a day and normally, I have had STEM Ambassadors attending and doing hands on activities with the students. This has gone down really well with our students so this year I decided to add a few industrial visits and let the students select. I am very keen to make this an annual event and will happily work with you to tweak the program to give the students a better understanding of the uses of STEM. I know we separately need more engineers in this country!”

SC Innovation is the engineering development and production business division for the group, which solves unusual engineering problems for the commercial and civilian sectors; Civil Nuclear, Off-Shore Engineer, Emergency & Rescue and Oil & Gas, to name just a few.
